Technical Contacts at the ICCI

Dr. Francois Botha has a Ph.D in Materials Science from the University of Bath in England and joined the Illinois Clean Coal Institute in February 2001 as Project Manager. His research interest is in coal science and carbon materials. A native of South Africa, Francois’ career in coal science began with South Africa’s Sasol Oil and Gas company where he conducted research in gold adsorption onto activated carbon, coal cleaning and coal-derived fuels. Dr. Botha emigrated to the USA in 1993 and worked at the University of Kentucky in Lexington until his employment at the ICCI. As a project manager at the ICCI, he is involved in implementing and monitoring projects in the area of coal combustion byproducts. Research projects in this area focus on beneficial uses of fly ash and flue gas desulfurization sludge. He also acts as webmaster for the ICCI website.
